Susan Faludi, New York Times, 8/25/08
"Much has been made of the timing of
Hillary Clinton’s speech before the Democratic National Convention tonight, coming as it
does on the 88th anniversary of women’s suffrage. … But many of
Mrs. Clinton’s supporters … regard their candidate’s cameo as a
consolation prize. And they are not consoled. … Many
daughters of a feminist generation seem pleased to proclaim themselves so 'beyond
gender' that they don’t need a female president. As it turns
out, they won’t have one. But they will still have all the abiding inequalities that
Hillary Clinton, especially in defeat, symbolized."

be telling my delegates that I will be voting for Barack Obama. How they vote is a more
personal decision." —Hillary Clinton, 8/25

IN HER OWN WORDS
HILLARY CLINTON speech
on Barack Obama
at "Women for Obama"event in NYC 7/11
Transcribed by LA Times; with VIDEO
"I know how difficult it is for people who have invested their time, their energy,
their money, their emotion …to turn on a dime, to say, O.K., now we're onto the next
chapter. But anyone who voted for me has so much in common with those who voted for
Barack, and it is critical that we join forces. …
The stakes are high for everyone …But I would argue they are particularly high for
women. It matters greatly who our president is. Whether or not we will pay attention to
the needs of the women who work in this hotel, who served this breakfast, who got up
before the crack of dawn and came here, hoping the children they left behind …would be
safe and [that] their work will be rewarded fairly …"

Chris Matthews of MSNDBC demonstrates, again, why he should be
fired
"Matthews said the Obamas are 'like the Huxtables,' and praised Hillary
Clinton and Michelle Obama as exceptional role models: 'They do everything right. They
have great kids, they work their hearts off, they make it in their professions, they
don’t live off welfare, they don’t commit crimes, they don’t live on affirmative
action.'"—New York Times, 8/27/08
Former Pres. Jimmy Carter asserts Hillary as V.P. would be
'worst mistake that could be made'
"I have always respected Carter, but was disappointed to hear him suggest
Obama should snub Clinton and the millions of voters who stand with her. On the verge of
this historic opportunity, there's no reason to intentionally alienate half the
Democratic Party and damage its relationship with many American women who see Clinton as
representing their interests and aspirations."—Bruce Vandiver, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 6/9/08

John McCain Watch
McCain Tries to Rile Up Clinton Voters Against Obama |
The Trail, 8/23/08 "A new television ad by
Sen. John McCain aims to tap into anger at Sen. Barack Obama among the legions of Hillary
Clinton supporters by suggesting that the Democratic nominee dissed his one-time rival."
| "I'm Hillary Clinton, and I do not approve that message."
—Clinton's comment about the ad at a meeting with NY Democrats, 8/24.
He's No Teddy Roosevelt | New York Times,
8/15/08 "Senator McCain …is doing everything possible to build
his ties to the big money, conservative, anti-tax wing of the Republican party, even at
the cost of reversing his earlier principled stances."

McCain's Views on Social Security | Nancy

"The senator appears to be the heir to a long line of opponents who
have questioned Social Security's scope, structure and underlying values."
Like Obama, McCain Devotes a Day to Women
VotersAP/USA Today, 7/11/08
"Republicans believe McCain has a chance to pick up Democratic and
independent women who are angry or disappointed that Hillary Rodham Clinton lost her bid
to become the first female president. But the Hudson event seemed geared to hard-core
conservatives."
A 'Mad Men' Cameo For John McCain? Charles Babington, AP, 7/11/08
"McCain's sexist comments and opposition to women's rights should
dissuade Hillary Clinton supporters from voting for him. …when you combine [his sexist
slurs] with McCain's stubborn resistance to women's rights - on equal pay, workplace
discrimination, abortion, you name it - you should have a formula for female vote
repellent."

"Few in either party expect a massive defection of liberal women. But
the McCain campaign thinks that distaste over what happened to Clinton, combined with its
candidate's appeal, could help McCain break through to independent females. They are a

IT'S NOW ABOUT
RESPECT:
"Obama may have won the nomination but it will mean nothing
if he does not win in November, and to do that he needs the votes and even the
enthusiastic support of Hillary and her supporters. Clinton's supporters cannot be
insulted, bullied, or guilted into enthusiastic support in the fall. …The party must [also] stand against the current cultural backlash against feminism
in a way that lays the groundwork for women (and men) to support the next woman who runs
for the presidency without continuing fear of ridicule."

WHY NOT HER?
""Hillary friend and financial backer Susie Tompkins Buell lunched with
Hillary [recently]. …Buell wrote in an email to me that over lunch she looked at Hillary
and thought, 'Why not her, why him?'
"She described Hillary as "resolved and jok[ing] and pondering. She was giving us all a
boost … She is so gracious and doing all she can to unite the party but so many of us can
simply not go there yet. We are waiting to see HIM unite the party. He is not doing that
at all.' …
"Buell is particularly offended that Obama is 'not even considering
Hillary for VP,' which she calls "such poor judgment … It seems careless to not want the
strongest person possible to fill your shoes should something happen. …
Buell signed her email, 'Sadder than ever.'"

UNITY
"Despite the public displays of unity, Democrats who witnessed an Obama
fundraiser with Clinton's top donors in June reported it as more awkward than
unifying.
'This felt like when your mom forces you to go visit your Aunt Ida and she has to pinch
your cheeks and you're sitting there in an uncomfortable suit and you can't wait to
leave,' a top Clinton donor told ABC News' Kate Snow."
